What are physiotherapists?

Physiotherapists are primary health care professionals who help people of all ages and lifestyles maintain a desired level of active living and physical mobility. With their applied knowledge and understanding of the human body in action, physiotherapists are able to help you increase you mobility, relieve pain, build strength, and improve balance and cardiovascular function. Physiotherapists not only treat injuries, they also teach you how to prevent the onset of pain or injury that may limit your activity. – Canadian Physiotherapy Association

Does OHIP cover physiotherapy?

To be eligible for Physiotherapy Services funded under this program, a person must, for each episode of care:

  • Be insured under the Ontario Health Insurance Plan and referred by a physician or a nurse practitioner based on an assessment that the person requires physiotherapy services and is within one of the following categories:
    1. Aged 65 years or older
    2. Aged 19 years and younger
    3. Recently discharged as an inpatient of a hospital if a physician on the medical staff of the hospital determines that the insured person needs physiotherapy services that are directly connected to the condition, illness, or injury for which the insured person was admitted to the hospital


  1. Be referred by a physician or nurse practitioner based on an assessment that the person requires physiotherapy services and is eligible for funding of services under the Ontario Disability Support (ODSP) or Ontario Works (OW) programs

Monday to Thursday: 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM

Friday: 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM

Do you need a doctor’s referral?

A physician’s referral is not required as physiotherapists are primary care practitioners. However, some extended health care companies require a physician’s referral. To be covered under the Ministry of Health OHIP program, a physician’s referral will be required.

How much of my physiotherapy cost does my extended health plan cover?

Everyone’s health plan is different. Once again it is best to contact your own individual provider and inquire on the percentage they will cover or if there is a cap to the amount they cover. Also note that we are able to direct bill most insurance companies.

I have a work-related injury. Does WSIB pay for my rehabilitation?

Yes, our clinic is registered with the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB). Billing will be sent directly to the WSIB.

I have been in a motor vehicle accident and sustained injuries. Can I attend your clinic for rehabilitation?

Yes, our clinic is registered with the Financial Services Commission of Ontario and billing will be sent directly to your insurance company.

How long will my first visit be?

Including the completion of some paperwork, your first visit with us will take approximately one hour.

What can I expect at my first appointment?

  • Review of your medical history
  • Orthopedic assessment of your injury
  • Explanation of your injury and diagnosis
  • Treatment and home exercises
  • Discussion regarding goals and treatment plan

How long do follow-up visits take?

Typically a follow-up visit lasts approximately 30-40 minutes. We will take the time needed to treat your specific condition.
